Younger students gathered on a classroom rug with volunteers

Our volunteers support students in grades 2–4 at Dr. Ruby Shaw Elementary School in Norwalk, Connecticut.

Read together, talk about stories, help with creative activities, and offer encouragement. A patient listener can help a child feel more comfortable asking questions and trying something new.

The club is based at Staples High School in Westport, but students from other schools and community members are welcome to contact us about joining.

A little preparation goes a long way.

Student leaders coordinate activities with the school. Before you attend, confirm the visit details, what to bring, and any school requirements with our team.

Start with a hello.

You don’t need to have every detail figured out before you get in touch.

  1. Tell us you’re interested

Introduce yourself and share your school or community connection.

  2. Plan your first visit

Our team will discuss opportunities, timing, and school requirements with you.

  3. Come ready to connect

Listen, be patient, and help each student feel included. Ask a student leader if you need guidance.

Before you join.

Do I have to go to Staples?

Do I need experience working with children?

No experience is needed! Just bring patience, be good with kids, and be flexible.

When do visits happen?

We aim to hold volunteer sessions twice a month. Contact our team for upcoming dates and confirmed times.

Can I earn community service hours?

Yes! You can earn community service hours by volunteering with Share The Hour. Our team can help you record your hours.

What if I can’t attend a visit?

That’s okay! Just let our team know if you can’t attend a session.
